GRE revised General - Frequently Asked Questions
When does the test change formats? The revised version went into effect on August 1, 2011. Everyone must now take the GRE revised General.
What has changed about the GRE?A lot has changed with the new format of the GRE, including the exam content, formatting, and scoring. However, the core of the exam is basically the same. The changes are intended to improve the exam’s ability to measure critical reasoning skills and assess likelihood of success in graduate school – the same goal the exam has always had.
The exam will still consist of three sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each section has undergone some sort of change.
Why did ETS decide to change the GRE?ETS states that the new test is better for the exam taker and the universities that use the GRE to evaluate applicants. The new revised GRE places more emphasis on data interpretation and critical thinking skills. The test also includes a new scoring matrix, which is intended to help schools compare differences between students in a more meaningful way.
Is the new GRE harder than the old version of the GRE?The revised version of the GRE is DIFFERENT than the old version of the GRE, but not necessarily harder. The GRE is scored relative to the performance of all test takers, meaning that your performance can still be measured in comparison to others seeking entry into graduate school. While some components of the new format may be considered harder by some test-takers, other components may be considered less difficult. This will vary from individual to individual.
How do I register for the GRE?Register for the GRE online through ETS at www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register.
How much will the GRE Revised cost? The fee for the GRE General is $160 as of August 1, 2011. The exam fee changes often. Check the ETS website for the most up to date fee schedule.
How will the GRE Revised be scored? The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the exam is scored on a scale of 130-170, in 1-point increments. This differs significantly from the old score scale of 200 to 800, with 10-point increments, but it basically achieves the same result for the test taker. The reason for the change is primarily appearance. ETS wants a small difference (one or two increments) to LOOK small (one or two points).
The Writing section will maintain the same scoring scale of 0 to 6.
The most important thing to know about the test scoring system is that it compares a test taker’s performance with everyone else who has taken the test. It also means that schools will be able to compare test results regardless who which scale your score is reported in.
Schools have been provided with a score comparison matrix to help them compare scores in the old format with scores in the current format.
How long are scores on the Current GRE Test good for?All GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
